Johannesburg residents have been without electricity for days following the Bree Substation explosion that occurred earlier this month.
The outage, which occurred in the early hours of Friday, 6 February 2026, continues to affect customers in Newtown, parts of Parktown, Braamfontein, Bree West, Bank City, Ferreirasdorp, sections of the Johannesburg CBD, and Marshalltown.
In the latest update, City Power said repair work is underway and now at an advanced stage.
“Over the past 24 hours, significant progress has been made on site, with the affected area largely cleared. Steel structures have been removed, and openings created during preparations to demolish the firewall have been bricked up. Final testing on both transformers has been successfully completed, marking a critical step toward the restoration of power supply,” said City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena.
Mangena said technicians will now work on energising one transformer by the end of Thursday, which will enable the process of restoring electricity to affected customers.
“Based on current assessments, the indicative Estimated Time of Restoration (ETR) remains the end of this week. However, technical teams continue to work around the clock under strict safety conditions, with the goal of restoring supply sooner where possible,” Mangena added.
