Lieutenant General Edith Mavundla Faces Possible Suspension Over R360 Million Medicare24 Tender

Lieutenant General Edith Mavundla, SAPS Divisional Commissioner for Technology Management Services, has been served with a notice of intention to suspend as investigations into the controversial R360 million Medicare24 tender continue.

Mavundla served as deputy chairperson of the Bid Adjudication Committee that approved the contract awarded to Medicare24, a company linked to alleged underworld figure Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala. The tender has come under intense scrutiny after investigators flagged possible procurement irregularities and concerns over the company’s compliance with tender requirements.

The Medicare24 contract, which was later cancelled, forms part of a wider corruption probe within SAPS. Several senior police officials have already been arrested while others facing disciplinary action in connection with the deal, SAPS has acknowledged that basic criminal background checks were not conducted on Matlala before the contract was awarded.

Mavundla has been given an opportunity to make representations to National Commissioner General Fannie Masemola before a final decision is taken on her suspension pending disciplinary proceedings.
