Mpumalanga police have arrested 95 Libyan nationals at a farm in White River for breaking immigration laws.
They lied on their visa applications, saying they were coming to South Africa to train as security guards. Police think they were getting military training instead.
Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, a national police spokesperson, said SAPS in Mpumalanga, along with the Department of Home Affairs and Police Intelligence, found the suspected military training base.
Acting provincial commissioner, Major General Dr Zeph Mkhwanazi, led a joint operation on Friday, 26 July, which led to the arrests.
The 95 Libyan nationals are now being questioned by the authorities.
The farm, initially meant for training security guards, seems to have been turned into an illegal military training camp.
Mkhwanazi stressed the importance of keeping the province and country safe.
“This operation shows our commitment to act quickly and decisively against any threats to our national interests and the safety of our citizens,” he said.
The investigation is still ongoing, and more details will be shared as they become available. Meanwhile, SAPS has assured the public that there is no immediate threat to community safety.
