Lerato Mvelase emotional as she clocks in for her first radio show

Actress and television host Lerato Mvelase could not hold back tears as she began her radio show on Power FM on Sunday.

Mvelase is known for her work in theatre, as well as television, as an actress and host of shows like Seng’khathele on DStv. But her career is sprouting a new branch, which sees her venturing into radio on one of the country’s major stations.

“I apologise in advance because my children are sitting outside the studio right now with my mom, and this chapter of my life is something that I know I waited for for many, many years,” a tearful Mvelase began.

“Sometimes we do other things, thinking that some things are not for us, but God always has a different plan,” she continued.

Mvelase related her conversation with her mother, where she gleaned the wisdom of her elder.

“God said: ‘Humble yourself under my strong hand, and in [due] time, I will elevate you.’ And I think that is very significant to where I am right now at the station because many of us, we work so hard. We commit ourselves, and sometimes we feel like we’re not seen… but I just wanna encourage you… to say: Humble yourself under His righteous hand, and continue and focus on what you’re meant to be doing. The right time, the right people will show up for you… And you will be elevated at the right time.”

The 43-year-old mother of two daughters switched gears to give credit to the station.

“And I just wanna say thank you to the station for this moment because it’s not something I was looking at doing at this point in my life… without realising that God was just aligning me, my ancestors were aligning me for this very moment.”

Lerato Mvelase’s family is her motivation and strength

“It is my first show today, and I apologise, it is such an emotional moment for me because the little people I’ve worked so hard for are sitting outside watching me. My mom, who’s my pillar, is outside watching me. And I’m so proud of this moment. And I wanna say thank you to Power FM for giving me an opportunity to share my voice,” Mvelase said.

What is her show about?

“The idea of this show, Power Perspectives… is to really bring the human aspect of our life experiences. We can’t run away from the politics of the country, we can’t run away from the economics of the country, the social injustice of the country. But I think the most important thing is: How do we humanise our experiences?” Mvelase said.

You can listen to Mvelase every Sunday between 6 pm and 9 pm.
