Legendary South African comedian and actor Leon Schuster is set to receive a Outstanding Contribution to Film and TV Award at the upcoming National Film & TV Awards South Africa (NFTASA), recognising his decades-long influence on the country’s entertainment industry.
Schuster will be honoured alongside fellow industry icons Alfred Ntombela and Jerry Mofokeng wa Makhetha at the third annual NFTASA, taking place on 22 November at the South African State Theatre.
Global recognition
The awards are hosted by the National Film Academy, which also runs versions in the UK and US, and aims to elevate South African talent to global recognition.
“It is essential to honour South African legends in the film and television industry,” said Sara Kensington, global partnerships manager for the National Film Academy.
“While we celebrate iconic figures who have paved the way, this year’s nominees showcase the next generation of exceptional talent.”
A Tribute After Adversity
Now 74, Leon Schuster’s recognition comes after a challenging period in his personal life.
In 2023, he suffered serious injuries after a fall while filming Mr Bones 3, requiring surgery and months of physiotherapy.
A second fall during recovery caused further setbacks, fuelling false rumours of his death – rumours he later dismissed on social media.
Despite these challenges, Schuster has returned to the spotlight.
He was recently honoured at the Silwerskerm Awards, and a five-part documentary series chronicling his life – titled Oh Schucks… It’s Schuster! – premiered on kykNET this month.
The series explores Leon Schuster’s journey from radio broadcaster and prankster to one of South Africa’s most recognisable faces in cinema.
