Lekgwathi – What Pirates Must Learn From Sundowns

Former Orlando Pirates captain Lucky Lekgwathi says the Buccaneers need to swallow their pride and learn from Mamelodi Sundowns, if they are to be competitive on all fronts next season.

Pirates have the MTN 8 and Nedbank Cups to defend next season, while looking to make it a competitive return in the CAF Champions League and the DStv Premiership, where everyone wants to knock Sundowns of their perch after Masandawana won six titles in a row.

Lekgwathi, who captain the Sea Robbers to the double treble, spoke to iDiski Times writer Lethabo Kganyago in the current edition of the newspaper and said besides beefing up the squad in the right areas, Pirates should look and learn from Sundowns, who have been managing to be competitive in every competition in recent seasons.

“It’s going to be tough but you know sometimes you swallow your pride and learn from your neighbours how they did it,” Lekgwathi told iDiski Times.

“I mean Sundowns managed to play all these competitions and have been winning all these Cups, including the Champions League.

“This season they were in the semi-final and unlucky to not win but you learn from Sundowns how Sundowns has done it.

“You need to have a big enough squad to give players a chance, which is why I said to you it’s good to continue with a coach who knows the players and their strengths.

“You need a big enough squad, especially when you know that you are going to play in Africa, the league and attempting to win all the trophies.”
