New Cape Town City striker Wayde Lekay has opened up on his move to the Citizens after parting ways with TS Galaxy and trials at Kaizer Chiefs and Royal AM.

Lekay left Galaxy in end of June and he was heavily linked with Chiefs, spending a few days at Naturena being assessed by the club but Chiefs opted against signing him.

He then appeared at Royal AM, but Thwihli Thwahla, too, opted against signing the 25-year-old, with many thinking the striker might run out of options. However, days later, City snatched him up and he made his starting XI debut against Amakhosi on Tuesday.

Lekay insisted he remained calm before revealing when things happened they happened very quick, as he signed for City in the morning and made his first match-day squad in the evening of the Maritzburg United game.

“I think it’s a situation where everyone thinks I was under pressure, but I always believe God will always place me where he wants me to be,” he said during City’s media day.

“I was calm, I was just training hard in the meantime but coming into the club they welcomed me with open arms. I signed in the morning and was in the evening game squad.”

City lost in the final of MTN8 last season on penalties against Mamelodi Sundowns at Moses Mabhida stadium. Lekay was asked if he is the missing link between the club and the trophy he made it clear that he is here to help the club in any way that will make it succeed.

“I have to credit the team for what they did last season,” he added.

“My goal is to always help the team to the best of my ability and if I can make a difference in any way, scoring, assisting, or just helping in the play that’s what I’m always gonna try to the best of my ability. So we gonna try to go all the way as a team collectively, we have to go there and do the job “

The Cape Town-based side will face AmaZulu FC in the quarter-final of MTN8 at Athlone Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Both teams have already faced each other in the league and Usuthu came victorious by 2-1 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
