Legendary South African Actor Mfana “Jones” Hlophe Dies at 55🕊

South Africa’s entertainment industry is mourning the death of legendary actor, singer and dancer Mfana “Jones” Hlophe, who died at the age of 55.

Hlophe died on Wednesday, 7 October 2026, according to reports published today, Friday. His family reportedly confirmed that he had been battling Type 1 diabetes for years.

Born in Umlazi, Durban, on 29 April 1971, Hlophe built a career spanning more than three decades across television, theatre, music and dance.

He began his professional acting journey under the mentorship of celebrated theatre pioneer Mbongeni Ngema before further developing his craft under the late playwright and director Gibson Kente.

Hlophe became widely recognised for his role as Jabu in the SABC1 drama series Soul City, which he appeared in between 2006 and 2008. He also portrayed Zakhele in Uzalo and featured in other television productions, including Generations: The Legacy.

In 2026, he returned to television in Generations: The Legacy, portraying Nimrod, and appeared in the Mzansi Magic telenovela KwaBaba.

His contribution to South African theatre extended beyond local stages. He performed in acclaimed productions, including Sarafina!, Ipi Ntombi, Gumboots and Woza Albert!, with some of his work reaching international audiences.

Hlophe also appeared in the 1992 film adaptation of Sarafina!, further cementing his place in South Africa’s performing arts history.

Beyond performing, he established Enjay Productions, through which he pursued creative projects and opportunities to develop emerging talent.

Tributes from fellow performers and members of the entertainment industry have highlighted his influence on younger artists and his contribution to the South African arts sector.

Hlophe’s death marks the loss of a versatile performer whose work reached audiences through television, film and theatre.

Further details will be added as more information becomes available.
