Four learners have been suspended and will face hearings after a “fake slave auction” at Pinelands High School in Cape Town.

Grade 8 coloured learners were recorded “bidding” for their black classmates.

“The investigation is almost done, and 24 learners have been interviewed,” said Bronagh Hammond, spokesperson for the provincial education department.

“Four learners are suspended and will face a hearing.”

The video, captioned “slavery at school is crazy”, showed pupils “bidding” up to R100,000 and offering to “buy” their peers with Bitcoin.

“Steps will also be taken against other learners who may have broken the school rules,” Hammond added.

Counselling support has been given to those affected by the incident.

The South African Human Rights Commission is also investigating the “auction”.

Commissioner Chris Nissen told the SABC: “In this country, we’ve got a history of slavery … so [the Pinelands incident is] unacceptable and we will investigate.”
