Mondli appeared in court for the first time and requested permission to write his exams through his legal aid lawyer. According to Free State Education spokesperson Howard Ndaba, the Brandfort Magistrate’s Court denied the 20-year-request old’s to be released in order to write the exams.

According to reports, the State objected to the request, claiming that other students would suffer additional trauma if they took the exams alongside him.

According to reports, the 20-year-old who is currently in police custody was adopted by the late teacher and lived with her in her home.

As previously reported, Free State Education MEC Dr Tate Makgoe said the incident had left educators and learners in shock and distress just days before the official start of the 2022 Grade 12 examinations.

“In 2019 she gave us 85%, 2020, 82% and  last year 84.2% in physical science. We have lost a consummate educator, a fountain of knowledge and a paragon of a noble teaching profession,” he said.
