Azizipho Langbooi, a 20-year-old learner from Rocklands Combined School, was killed in front of the school gates on Friday afternoon near Kariega in Nelson Mandela Bay.

Azizipho, a Grade 10 learner, reportedly got into a fight with a 19-year-old Grade 9 learner while walking to their school transport.

The learner’s father, Pastor Runeli, said they arrived at the school while his body was still lying in front of the gates.

“When we got to the school, he was lying in a pool of blood covered with a blanket. I lifted it and saw it was my son. He was not breathing; he had died,” he said.

Police spokesperson Andre Beetge confirmed the incident.

“On Friday at about 2pm, police were told about a murder outside the gates of Rocklands High School.

“When they arrived, they found the body of a 20-year-old Grade 10 learner with a neck wound. It is said that he had been in a fight with a 19-year-old Grade 9 learner,” said Beetge.

Police have opened a murder investigation.

Eastern Cape Education MEC Fundile Gade said, “We are very shocked by this because we always believe each school is a safe place for learners. We have programmes like anti-gangsterism, anti-bullying and social cohesion.”

He said the department would send social workers to the school to support the learners after this tragedy.

The suspect ran away after the incident, and police are still looking for him.
