Sheik Imam Mansoor, former leader of the National Freedom Party (NFP) in Parliament, suffered a heart attack after his new party failed to win seats in the KZN legislature and National Assembly.

Mansoor was admitted to hospital in a critical condition.

Leaders of his new party, the African Movement 4 Change (AM4C), visited him in a Durban hospital on Tuesday after his successful surgery.

The AM4C’s KZN premier candidate, Sindi Maphumulo-Mashinini, told Scrolla.Africa that the party has temporarily paused activities to focus on Mansoor’s recovery.

“He is responding very well after surgery. The executive committee visited him in the hospital to pray with the Muslim community. Our president is a very strong person,” said Maphumulo-Mashinini.

Mansoor left the NFP a few months before the 29 May general election to form the AM4C.

He joined the NFP in 2011, soon after it was founded by the late Zanele kaMagwaza-Msibi, but he was caught up in a 10-year court battle with its leadership over positions and parliamentary finances.

KaMagwaza-Msibi suffered a severe stroke in 2014, leading to power struggles within the party.

Many leaders, including Mansoor, left the NFP to form their own organisations or join other political parties.
