Bradley Grobler scored his 7th goal of the season as SuperSport United beat Cape Town City 1-0 at the DHL Stadium on Tuesday evening in their DStv Premiership fixture.
While it was a competitive opening 45 between Eric Tinkler’s and Gavin Hunt’s teams, it was also a half, that for the most part, failed to see either side really trouble the goalkeepers.
The visitors were dealt an early blow when Thatayaone Ditlhokwe had to be replaced with ten minutes remaining of the first half, Siyabonga Nhlapo coming on for the Botswana international.
Just before half-time, there were chances at both ends but Darren Keet and Ricardo Goss, at the other end, made good saves from Grant Margeman and Thamsanqa Mkhize respectively, while SuperSport were also assisted by the crossbar to deny Taariq Fielies, to keep the score goalless.
Khanyisa Mayo was substituted after limping off at the end of the first 45, with Kajally Drammeh taking his place after the break.
The second half followed a similar pattern to the first, with half-chances at both ends not being converted, much to the frustration of Hunt and Tinkler.
Finally, the duck was broken in the 82nd minute as Bradley Grobler got his head to the end of Patrick Maswanganyi’s cross and Keet was beaten. Grobler’s seventh of the season, and he is once again the joint-top scorer in the league.
While City pushed for a late equaliser, it wasn’t to be and it was the visitors who returned to second place with the win, while City dropped a position to tenth.
