Halala, Lalela Mswane is flying South African flag high and she has also made history worldwide as she becomes the first black woman to be crowned Miss Supranational.

The 24-year-old stood out from the contestants from 69 countries as she clinched the coveted title after a three-hour finale event that took place at the Strzelecki Park Amphitheatre in Nowy Sącz, Poland.

Her national costume dress, which pays homage to her Zulu heritage, impressed the judges. It was designed by Lloyd Kandlin of Cape Town, who also created the costume worn by Miss South Africa 2019, Zozibini Tunzi, who went on to become Miss Universe that year.

Mswane said on Friday night that she was “overwhelmed” by the victory, adding that “at the moment it still feels surreal.”

“I am deeply thankful to all the amazing people who have supported and uplifted me, I couldn’t have done it without them. I want to thank the organisers of Miss Supranational, the Polish people, all my fellow contestants, the Miss SA organisation and my SA fans. This title is not mine alone, it is SA’s victory.”
