Lakay – We Need To Score More Than One

Lyle Lakay has said Mamelodi Sundowns’ CAF Champions League quarter-final second-leg match against Petro de Luanda is a must win, and he is hoping the supporters will push them over the line.

Lakay scored the important away-goal against Luanda in Angola from a direct free-kick. But the 2016 CAF Champions League winners were not able to hold onto their lead, as they conceded two goals in the first stanza and that gave Girabola log leaders a 2-1 advantage.

Lakay made it clear that anything less than a win won’t be enough as he feels like they are a better team this season compared to last, and feels like they can go all the way in the competition this campaign.

“As everybody knows, we lost outside, we got an away goal, something that we wanted, but the result wasn’t what we wanted,”Lakay said at the pre-match press conference.

“And then obviously, we have to rectify it this side. I would say like everybody knows it’s a must win for us. And we need to go all out to win on one Saturday and go through to the semi-finals.”

With Sundowns in need of at least a 1-0 win to secure their spot in the semi-finals, Lakay believes that they must score more than one goal, and also make sure that they don’t concede, with Masandawana yet to concede at home in this season’s CAF Champions League campaign.

“Like I said, first of all, we have to win,” he continued.

“You mentioned we have to score one goal, but no, I don’t think one is always enough. We have to score more than one. You know, even though we need one to win, obviously they don’t have to score.

“We as players, I think we went over the previous game that we played in Luanda, and we rectified and identified our mistakes, like you say the goals that we conceded. I would also agree that it was two errors and obviously we got punished. But yeah, we have to rectify that. And obviously, go into this match knowing that we have to score, we have to win to qualify.

“And also I think you’ve seen during the week the work that the media team and the club has been putting in, with regards to the supporters coming to the stadium, and I hope we will have a full house with regards to the support.”

Sundowns are set to face Petro de Luanda in the CAF Champions League quarter-final second leg at FNB Stadium. Tickets are free for this encounter but your must be vaccinated. Kick off is set to be at 18h00.
