An 18-year-old boy was discovered dead after being accused of stealing a cellphone in Nkangala, Inanda KwaZulu-Natal.

The teen’s body was found on an unpaved pathway on Sunday after the family launched a search party. Prem Balram, spokesperson for Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), said they received a call for assistance at 09:27 after the teenager’s family discovered his body during a search.

“On arrival, RUSA Medics examined the teenager and discovered that he had sustained blunt force trauma to his body,” said Balram.

According to his family, three of the deceased’s friends arrived at their home in eMzinyathi this morning around 09:00 and inquired as to whether the teenager returned last night.

According to Balram, his friends informed his family that members of the community had assaulted them after being accused of stealing a cellphone.

“The three managed to escape, however, they could not locate the teenager thereafter. The boy’s family launched a search party and recovered his bruised and battered body in Nkangala,” said Balram.

He further went on to say that the deceased was a Grade 10 student at Magqibagqiba Secondary School in eMzinyathi. Police are investigating the matter.
