- KZN Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli has officially endorsed Provincial Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi for a second term, citing his decisive leadership in tackling violent crime.
- The endorsement follows Mkhwanazi’s explosive allegations of political interference against Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and Deputy National Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya.
- Premier Ntuli maintains that Mkhwanazi’s reappointment is vital for provincial stability and security as the March expiry of his current term approaches.
KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli has formally endorsed Provincial Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi for a second term, citing his “decisive and hands-on” leadership as essential for the province’s stability.
With Mkhwanazi’s current mandate ending in March, the Premier’s office praised his success in tackling organised crime, extortion, and political killings through intelligence-led operations.
Ntuli emphasised that maintaining such professional standards is critical for safety and economic development, particularly as the region prepares for the upcoming local government elections.
This endorsement follows a period of significant tension after Mkhwanazi’s explosive briefing on 6 July 2025, in which he alleged political interference in police operations.
The Commissioner specifically accused Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and Deputy National Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya of meddling in provincial matters.
By publicly backing Mkhwanazi, Premier Ntuli has prioritised provincial operational success over national political friction, setting the stage for a potential confrontation with national authorities regarding the Commissioner’s future.
