KwaZulu-Natal police shot and killed three suspects on Friday morning.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed the shooting.

He said three suspects, wanted for at least ten murder cases, were killed in a shootout with police in the KwaDlangezwa area of Empangeni early on Friday, 26 July.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Stabilisation Team, part of Operation Vala uMgodi, acted on a tip that the suspects were hiding in a house in KwaDlangezwa.

“When the police announced their presence, the suspects opened fire, leading to a shootout which ended with the three suspects being killed,” said Netshiunda.

The suspects were also allegedly involved in an ATM bombing in Esikhaleni that left one suspect dead on Thursday.

They were found with at least two firearms, and the police are still searching the crime scene for more evidence.

KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi said, “Criminals who shoot at the police should expect the same kind of response. Police officers must arrest and bring criminals to justice, but if they are shot at, they have to return fire to stay alive.”
