Pietermaritzburg – The MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs has denied a request from the ANC-run Msunduzi local municipality to extend Sabelo Hlela’s contract as acting municipal manager. Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi told the municipality that the law does not allow a municipal manager to act for more than three months. He told them to get his help in finding a qualified replacement. Hlela had been acting after the suspension of the municipal manager, Lulamile Mapholoba.

KwaMashu – A suspect who escaped during a shootout with police in Lindelani, Ntuzuma, on Sunday was arrested on Monday morning. The suspect, a 38-year-old police constable from KwaMashu police station, was found at a hospital north of Durban being treated for a gunshot wound to his left arm. He will appear in court soon.

Newcastle – The IFP-run Amajuba district municipality is facing a leadership crisis after the reinstatement of municipal manager Mpumelelo Manqele. The municipality now has two municipal managers, as Thulani Dube, the acting manager, is still in his role, causing confusion among the staff.

Durban – The South African Weather Service has issued a warning about the risk of wildfires in the eastern and southern parts of the province. The danger is expected on Tuesday due to strong winds.
