Pietermaritzburg – About 70 unemployed teachers have started a sit-in outside the Department of Education headquarters in Pietermaritzburg. They began the protest on Monday, demanding jobs. Some of these teachers were part of a previous sit-in that ended after the department promised to start hiring. However, only a few have received job offers since then.
Umzumbe – The IFP has won the deputy mayor position in Umzumbe local municipality. Mlungisi Ndlovu was elected on Tuesday to replace Mhlengi Luthuli from the ANC. The IFP and ANC recently made a deal, allowing the ANC to keep the mayor’s job while the IFP gets the speaker and deputy mayor positions.
Nongoma – Sipho Nkosi, the acting municipal manager of Nongoma local municipality, is back at work. He was briefly removed after the municipality lost a court case against the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, who had blocked the extension of his contract and that of the acting chief financial officer, Bhekokuhle Menyuka.
Howick – The DA-led Umngeni local municipality wants help from the province to settle a dispute with the ANC-led Msunduzi local municipality. Umngeni says Msunduzi supplies electricity to the Hilton suburb without a proper licence. Umngeni wants a formal agreement to let Msunduzi continue and collect revenue legally.
Port Shepstone – The Umkhonto Wesizwe party will contest the Ray Nkonyeni municipality by-elections on 11 September. Thamsanqa “Pat” Madlala will be their candidate for Ward 14. Last month, the Jacob Zuma-led party competed in Newcastle and finished second to the IFP.
