KZN news bites: Prisoners join thousands for matric exams

Durban – About 56 inmates from KwaZulu-Natal will write their final National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams this year. The inmates are in Westville Prison, Ekuseni, and Qalalabusha Correctional Services in Pinetown. Education MEC Sipho Hlomuka revealed this during a state of matric readiness announcement at Westville Boys High School in Durban. Hlomuka also shared that KwaZulu-Natal has 172,433 full-time and 18,019 part-time candidates set to write the exams.

uMsinga –  A Hawks operation has led to the arrest of 30-year-old Lindokuhle Ngubane, wanted for a triple murder in kwaNqulu, Nquthu. The Hawks, working with Newcastle public order police and crime intelligence, found Ngubane in possession of an unlicensed 9mm pistol at KwaHholwane in uMsinga.

Okhahlamba – MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, announced that R83-million from a R465-million budget will be allocated to emerging contractors in the deep rural area of Okhahlamba. The funds will be used to rehabilitate 24km of the P394 road.

Nkandla – The Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) party welcomed the dismissal of Jabulani Khumalo’s application in the Electoral Court. Khumalo wanted to be declared the leader of MK. However, the court ruled against him and ordered him to pay the party’s costs. MK spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndlela said: “This is the fourth time Khumalo has lost legal battles related to his alleged leadership of the party.”
