Durban – A parliamentary committee visited Ithala SOC Ltd on Tuesday to investigate the problems the company is facing after its financial services licence was suspended. The committee will meet with Ithala’s leaders and key entities like the South African Reserve Bank and the Financial Sector Conduct Authority. They want to understand how the licence suspension affects Ithala and its plans to become a fully-fledged bank, and discuss ways to fix the issues the company is dealing with.
Umvoti – The Abantu Batho Congress (ABC) in the Umvoti Local Municipality has asked for an urgent meeting with council speaker Ntombi Ngubane to discuss how the municipality will refund people charged high electricity tariffs. Nersa’s tariff hikes were recently challenged by AfriForum and overturned by the North Gauteng High Court. ABC councillor Mfundo Masondo says the municipality needs to plan to follow the court’s decision quickly.
Durban – The former head of parks and recreation in eThekwini Municipality, Thembinkosi Ngcobo, says his ANC colleagues once worked with DA councillors to remove him from his job. In an interview with a Durban podcaster, Ngcobo claimed that ANC councillors encouraged DA councillors to complain to the provincial ANC office about his work, leading to efforts to push him out. He left the municipality a few years ago.
Dumbe – The National Freedom Party (NFP) is facing fresh leadership problems. The party’s president, Ivan Barnes, has told secretary-general Teddy Thwala that he has been “re-suspended”. Barnes says Thwala missed National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings, took the party to court, and tried to stop it from participating in the 29 May elections, in which they won one seat in KwaZulu-Natal and a cabinet position.
Ulundi – ActionSA’s provincial chairperson, Zwakele Mncwango, has asked Premier Thami Ntuli to help restore water services in several schools in Ulundi. Mncwango says the water was cut off because of a dispute between the Zululand District Municipality and the provincial education department. He has urged Ntuli’s office to resolve the issue quickly.
