KZN news bites: Nkandla wildfires destroy over 100 homes and fields

Sihle Mavuso presents the latest news from KwaZulu-Natal. 

Nkandla – Nkandla mayor Mbhekiseni Biyela said veld fires last week destroyed over 100 homes and burned down all grazing fields. Farmers now need help feeding their animals. Biyela said hunters, thieves, and drunk people started the fires.

Nongoma – The speaker of Nongoma municipality asked the community near Sihlahlasenkosi High School to stop fighting and solve problems peacefully. Babongile Sithole made this plea after visiting the school, where a fight nearby led to a Grade 12 student being stabbed to death.

Ladysmith – More areas in Ladysmith are asking the IFP-run municipality of the Uthukela district for clean water. Residents of KwaHlathi closed roads and schools to protest for better water services, and the protest continued on Tuesday. The area has had water problems for months. The district municipality says it is working to fix the water issues.

Port Shepstone – The taxi strike in Port Shepstone turned violent on Tuesday. Vehicles on the N2 were stoned, and one was set on fire. Roads near Esayidi were blocked with trucks, causing traffic jams for hours. Police were called to restore order. Taxi drivers are protesting against the impounding of their vehicles.

Durban – The DA expects Premier Thami Ntuli’s State of the Province Address on Wednesday to offer plans to fix the economy and create jobs. The DA also hopes Ntuli will address important socio-economic issues. He will deliver the address in Pietermaritzburg.
