Sihle Mavuso presents the latest news from KwaZulu-Natal.
uMhlabuyalingana – The Tembe community along the SA-Mozambique border in the northern part of the province has signed a memorandum of understanding with Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife and the Peace Parks Foundation to explore a range of profitable nature conservation and tourism initiatives in the area. In the long run, should the study be successful, the border between Tembe Elephant Park and Maputo National Park will be removed to allow wildlife to roam freely between the two parks.
Durban – The EFF in KZN says the process for its members to renew their membership ahead of its December 2024 National People’s Assembly is underway. The party added that this is being done to ensure that all its members are accounted for and that the party’s true strength in the province is known.
Pietermaritzburg – The National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP) association has commended Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube for halting a move to give the R10-billion school nutrition programme to one national supplier. The association says the programme should benefit many others in the value chain. It added that hard lessons were learned in KwaZulu-Natal when the programme was centralised in 2022.
Vryheid – The chief whip of the DA in Abaqulusi local municipality has written to the provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, requesting an investigation into Vryheid SAPS officers. Councillor Swelakhe Shelembe wrote to Mkhwanazi after an investigating officer dropped criminal charges against municipality employees who were recently arrested for cable theft. He says this is clear evidence of how some police officers work with alleged criminals.
Verulam – The provincial Department of Education is investigating a bullying incident at Verulam Secondary School in northern Durban. In the incident, a learner was recorded assaulting another. The department says it is committed to ensuring that all learners are protected while in school, hence the swift investigation.
