Sihle Mavuso presents the latest news from KwaZulu-Natal.

KwaMashu – A man was shot dead and his friend badly injured in K section, KwaMashu, Durban, on Wednesday morning while visiting a sangoma. Locals say they were there to get “cleansed”, and their killing is related to gang fights over the whoonga drug market. A well-known whoonga dealer was shot dead at a local tavern over the weekend. Whoonga (also known as nyaope) is a form of black tar heroin, sometimes mixed with other substances, that came into widespread use in South Africa in 2009

Durban – The MK party has filed a case against the DA’s federal chairperson, Helen Zille, claiming she insulted the people of KwaZulu-Natal by calling the party dogs. Zille had said: “We are not going to say the people of KZN can be thrown to the dogs,” during a discussion about the DA’s coalition pact with the ANC.

Hlabisa – The Pietermaritzburg High Court has stopped Prince Xolani Mdletshe from claiming to be the leader of the Mdletshe clan in KwaHlabisa. This came after his group installed him, even though the clan was still deciding on its next leader. Mhlanganyelwa Mdletshe brought the court application.

Dumbe – NFP President Ivan Barnes has called for an urgent meeting with eDumbe mayor Sibusiso Mkhabela and his municipal manager. Barnes says the ANC in the Mzala Nxumalo region has concerns about how the municipality is run, and if these issues aren’t fixed, it could affect their coalition agreement.

Umlazi – Students at the Coastal TVET College in Umlazi protested peacefully on Wednesday, demanding that their bathing facilities be fixed. They say they’ve had only cold water for weeks and want the problem solved, especially since it is winter.
