Sihle Mavuso presents the latest news from KwaZulu-Natal.
KwaMashu – A spaza shop owner in KwaMashu’s C-section narrowly escaped after someone tried to burn down her shop while she was sleeping inside it at around 2 am. She managed to survive by shouting for help, and her neighbours came to her rescue by putting out the fire before it could completely destroy the container she used as her shop. It is believed that the attack may be linked to competition between spaza shops in the area.
Loskop – The housing project in Loskop, near Estcourt, has been delayed again. The former MEC for Human Settlements, Sipho KK Nkosi, promised in October last year that it would continue, but nothing has changed. Contractors say they haven’t been paid since then, and their businesses are struggling.
Durban – The eThekwini municipality has started installing prepaid electricity meters in schools. So far, 66 of the 1,000 schools under the municipality have applied. The focus is on helping schools that are deep in debt due to unpaid municipal services.
Piet Retief – The Mkhondo Local Municipality, on the border between KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga, has decided to replace the mayor’s luxury Mercedes-Benz with an off-road 4×4 vehicle. This change was made because the Mercedes wasn’t suitable for the poor road conditions in the area.
Durban – The South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) has started its road safety campaign ahead of the festive season. On Saturday, Sanral held its first bikers’ road safety parade in Durban, starting in uMhlanga and going along the N2 past upgrades at the uMdloti and KwaMashu interchanges.
