Nongoma – Gauteng is teaming up with Zulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini for King Shaka Day in Ekurhuleni. The King’s office said on Friday that the second part of the event will be at Sam Ntuli Stadium in Thokoza on Saturday, 5 October. Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi approved the yearly uMkhosi weLembe ceremony last year when the province first honoured Isilo of kwaDukuza in Ekurhuleni.
Westville – KwaZulu-Natal’s Sports, Arts and Culture MEC Mntomuhle Khawula says academics aren’t helping the government change education. Speaking at UKZN’s Westville campus on Friday, Khawula said academics used to guide the government, but not anymore. “Our academics have turned into armchair critics of the government. We once had a call to decolonise education and enforce studies in our indigenous languages, but where are the papers or books for such? We don’t have it as government because our current academics no longer produce such work to drive the narrative,” he said.
Amaoti – Police are investigating a case of murder following the discovery of body parts along the main road next to a dumping site in the Lusaka area of Amaoti, Inanda, on Friday morning. KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the head and feet of an unknown person were found inside a black plastic bag. “Next to that bag was another transparent plastic bag containing human legs. Blood-stained clothing items and a blanket were found at the scene,” Netshiunda said.
Cator Manor – A police constable was arrested for stealing a bank card from a family involved in a hijacking accident. Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said: “When the hijacked vehicle was recovered in the Cato Manor area, the constable was called upon to drive the vehicle to Malvern … [and] got hold of the bank card and stole it.” The constable faces theft and fraud charges and will appear in Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Monday, October 7.
Nquthu – A key witness in the zama zama family murder near eQhudeni was shot dead on Friday, police said. The witness was involved in the case linked to Gauteng’s illegal mining fights.
