Durban – Canaan Mdletshe, the former secretary-general of the National Freedom Party (NFP), is not saying if he has joined the Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) Party. On Thursday, he was seen with MK party leaders outside the Durban High Court, where the party is in a legal battle with the ANC over the copyright of its name and logo. Mdletshe told Scrolla.Africa that he hasn’t joined the party but is interested in the case.
Ulundi – A fire killed three members of the Mkhize family in Ezinyosini, Ulundi, early on Wednesday morning. The fire, probably started by a candle, destroyed their eight-room house and injured four other family members. The deceased are Zibonele Mkhize, 55, Nomalanga Mchunu, 35, and Lisakhanya Mkhize, 10. The injured are Melokuhle Mkhize, 7, Lethokuhle Mkhize, 8, Zanobuhle Mkhize, 13, and Lwandile Hlongwa, 14.
Dumbe – Sibusiso Mkhabela, the national chairperson of the NFP, has written to the party’s president, Ivan Barnes, complaining about his leadership style. Mkhabela accused Barnes of acting like a dictator and ignoring party structures with his decisions.
KwaMashu – Police commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi announced that the SAPS is spending R300-million to install security cameras in KwaMashu and Ntuzuma to help fight crime in these areas known for high crime rates. Mkhwanazi announced this during a crime summit in Durban organised by Premier Thami Ntuli.
Madadeni – The Madadeni Regional Court sentenced Manqoba Dube, 29, to life in prison for gang-raping a woman in Osizweni township in December 2018. The court also ordered that Dube’s name be added to the national register of sex offenders. Police are still looking for his accomplice.
