KZN news bites: Duduzane downs umqombothi with Zuma’s blessing

Celani Sikhakhane presents the latest news from KwaZulu-Natal. 

Nkandla – Former president Jacob Zuma’s son, Duduzane, had people talking online after he was seen drinking traditional beer at a family gathering. He asked his father’s permission. Duduzane also surprised many by speaking fluent isiZulu, something he has not previously done in public. 

Durban – eThekwini municipality won a Development Project Award at the International Federation of Municipal Engineering Excellence Awards for its Transformative Riverine Management Programme. Mayor Cyril Xaba praised the collaborative approach to managing urban rivers. “We are embracing the value of natural ecosystems to address flooding and manage our water systems, which are more cost-effective and sustainable,” he said. 

Newcastle – Mayor Xolani Dube criticised township residents for renting spaza shops to foreigners, saying it hurts the local economy. The city also said it won’t fund foreign-run spaza shops.

Pietermaritzburg – KZN Premier Thami Ntuli returned from a two-week trip to New York. He’s set to brief the media on climate change strategies for the province.

Verulam – A 59-year-old soccer coach and pastor, David Mkhanyisi Ntshulana, was sentenced to 25 years for raping a nine-year-old boy in September 2023. He was also declared unfit to own firearms.
