Richards Bay – The City of Umhlathuze has promised to finish upgrading its sports complex within three months. However, the project has faced delays due to several factors, including the construction mafia, unexpected rain, and construction companies halting work for a month to demand subcontracts, which caused a four-month delay. The complex’s use as a national key point for the 2023 Armed Forces Day celebration also contributed to the delays.
Nongoma – The Nongoma Local Municipality has rejected candidates recommended by the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) for the municipal manager and chief financial officer (CFO) positions. CoGTA suggested Dr Nontobeke Khambule for the municipal manager position and three others for the CFO role. This disagreement led to a legal battle, with the municipality losing the case in the Pietermaritzburg High Court.
Eshowe – The Umlalazi Local Municipality is determined to maintain its exemplary record of managing public funds and aims to achieve another clean audit for the 2023-24 financial year. Along with King Cetshwayo, Umhlathuze, and Okhahlamba municipalities, Umlalazi was one of only four in the province to receive a clean audit for the 2022-23 period.
Jozini – Parents at Igugu Lesizwe High School in Jozini are outraged after the school principal allegedly beat their children, leaving them with bruises. Principal Mavundla reportedly punished the students for being absent without permission. The parents are calling on the provincial education department to take action against him.
Dannhauser – Four months after the death of a councillor at Dannhauser Local Municipality, the ANC has still not filled the vacant position. The late Siphelele Kunene, a former ANC Youth League leader in the Mbuso Kubheka region, served as a proportional representative councillor until his death in a car crash in May. Disagreements within the region are said to be delaying the selection of his replacement.
