Amajuba – Mpumelelo Manqele, the municipal manager of Amajuba district municipality in Newcastle, was locked out of his office on Tuesday. Manqele returned to work after last week’s council meeting, where he was given a notice of intention to suspend him over several allegations. His lawyers disputed these claims in a letter to Scrolla.Africa. Sources say Manqele found his office locked, and security guards told him they got orders to not let him in.
Pietermaritzburg – Mncedisi Makuyi, a deputy director for fire and disaster in the provincial cooperative governance and traditional affairs department, has asked MEC Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi to review his dismissal. Makuyi says he was wrongly fired for not showing up to work despite submitting leave forms. He also said his relationship with his boss worsened when he was linked to the MK party in the uThukela district.
Greytown – The Umzinyathi district municipality gave a hero’s welcome to Zakithi Ngubane, a Grade 9 learner from Greytown High School who was named second runner-up in the Miss Teen Super Globe Pageant 2024 in Bangkok, Thailand. Her home municipality organised a celebration at King Shaka International Airport.
Nongoma – MEC Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi says that Nongoma local municipality tried to get around a Pietermaritzburg High Court ruling by calling the extensions of Sipho Nkosi’s and Bhekokuhle Menyuka’s contracts “new” appointments. Buthelezi disagrees and has filed court papers to remove Nkosi as acting municipal manager and Menyuka as chief financial officer.
Hammarsdale – Bulk Connections, a Bidvest company, built three new classrooms for Umthombomuhle Intermediate School in Hammarsdale to reduce overcrowding. The company also built a staff office, bathrooms, and a kitchen, all costing R3-million. The school, built in 1993, has never had a staffroom. The project will be officially handed over to the school on Friday.
