Sihle Mavuso presents the latest news from KwaZulu-Natal.

Durban – Amnesty International South Africa says that 25 members of the Abahlali baseMjondolo movement have been killed since 2005. The socialist shack dwellers’ movement fights for the rights of people in informal settlements in KwaZulu-Natal’s eKhenana area. The report criticises South African authorities for not protecting these members and failing to get justice for the victims.

Nkandla – A 43-year-old man from Nkandla was given three life sentences for raping his niece multiple times. The abuse started in 2013 when the girl was only seven years old. The man threatened her with a knife to keep her quiet. She eventually told her aunt, leading to his arrest and conviction.

Jozini – The Jozini local municipality has appointed Lungelo Boxer Mpontshane as the acting municipal manager. He takes over from Jaconia Mngomezulu, who has moved to the provincial government. Mpontshane will be in charge for three months while the search for a permanent manager continues.

Richards Bay – The City of Umhlathuze, run by an IFP-DA coalition, has received two awards from the Auditor-General for good financial management. The municipality, based in Richards Bay, earned the 2022-23 Clean Audit Outcome award and the Sound Financial Management award. It is one of only four municipalities in the province to receive these honours.
