Uthongathi head coach Papi Zothwane has revealed that the club has been forced to train only once a week or use indoor facilities after losing their regular training facility due to the recent floods in KwaZulu-Natal.
Over 435 people died, and dozens are unaccounted for. Nearly 4 000 homes were destroyed, with more than 40 000 people displaced and more than 600 schools affected during the floods, which shook the whole world.
Although competitive sports have carried on within the province without significant disruptions, First Division club Uthongathi has been hit hard by the aftermath of the deadly floods.
The club training facilities, Sheil Mohadin and Outspan Ground in Tongaat, have been damaged and are unlikely to be unavailable until next season.
“It (floods) gave us a lot of problems because we had to skip training sessions. We had to use indoors (facility) sometimes; sometimes it’s unavailable,” Zothwane told FARPost.
“For now, there is a school that we have asked to help us in terms of training for the remainder of the season. So, we will see what we do, but for now, until next week, we will use the school because the same pitches that we use are very damaged, and I don’t think we will be able to use them even in the preseason.”

Zothwane also believes there were some positives to take away from their situation. “In the process, it also helped our players because some of these boys have played so many games and didn’t have time to recover, so some of these boys have rested and recovered well and gave good performances after that.
“But I must say it disturbed us very badly because the preparations were not pretty well because there are some games where we trained once or twice (a week). But in those games, I think we even played very well,” he said.
“But as I said, it gave us problems in terms of preparations, but it’s something beyond our control. Nature is nature. If something like that happens, we have to deal with how we come out of that, but that’s what happened.”
