KwaZulu-Natal is preparing for more snow and heavy rain after a recent snowstorm left thousands stranded and two dead.
The South African Weather Service has warned of heavy rain and snow in KZN and the Eastern Cape. Snow is expected in areas such as Ladysmith, Underberg, the Drakensberg, and Giant’s Castle.
Transport MEC Siboniso Duma stated that the province is ready.
“Following last weekend’s heavy snowfall, which resulted in thousands of motorists being trapped along the N3 and other major routes, we have strengthened our road safety measures,” Duma said.
“The Road Incident Management Systems, led by Sanral and consisting of all key role players on the national, provincial, and municipal road networks, are already settling on one plan.”
The focus is on major routes like the N3 and R617. Taxi and bus groups have also enhanced their safety measures.
Duma highlighted that South Africa’s economy is primarily driven by the transport and logistics sectors, which rely heavily on the two major ports of Richards Bay and Durban.
“We do not want to leave out our port operators and the value chain of fast-moving consumer goods,” he added.
Meteorologist Celeste Fourie warned: “For the Midlands and northern interior of KZN, we are expecting severe thunderstorms. The most significant impact will likely be damaging winds, excessive lightning, and heavy downpours.”
