The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal is using retired veterans to help rebuild weakened branches after former president Jacob Zuma’s Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) party thrashed it in the elections.
ANC KZN secretary Bheki Mtolo announced this decision after a recent provincial executive committee (PEC) meeting.
He said the PEC plans to strengthen ANC branches across the province.
“Our branches have become weak due to long-term infighting and gatekeeping. We will audit each branch to identify problems and fix them,” said Mtolo.
Organisers will visit every branch to look into their ability to lead and help improve them where necessary.
The ANC also plans to start a political education programme to renew its structures and regain people’s trust.
An experienced team, including Sibongile Besane, Mike Mabuyakhulu, Weziwe Thusi, Sbu Ndebele, and David Mahlobo, will lead the work.
They will focus on renewing the party, which Mtolo says is crucial for the ANC’s future success in the province.
The ANC’s decline in KZN began after Zuma announced the formation of the MK party in December, leading many ANC members to switch their votes to it in the 29 May general elections.
Support for the ANC dropped dramatically, and it lost 30 seats of the 44 it had previously held.
