Pastor Thamsanqa Nkevu, known for protecting schoolchildren in Kwanobuhle, won two major South African Hero Awards.

As chosen by fellow nominees, Nkevu received the Youth Empowerment and Community Builder of the Year awards at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg.

“I cannot describe the feeling. I am filled with overwhelming gratitude for the support I’ve received,” Nkevu said.

“It still hasn’t sunk in yet that I won the biggest award of the night; it feels unreal.”

For four years, Nkevu has woken up early to ensure women and children can cross a local bridge safely. He also buys school uniforms for those in need.

“I am hopeful that this will inspire other young people in my community to get up and do things that will uplift the community,” he said.

“The community of Kwanobuhle, which is known for drug abuse and crime, is now also recognised for good things.”

Nkevu thanked the event organisers.

“I am grateful for such a platform that recognises and encourages good deeds; I can never thank them enough for this.”
