Ntando Lurwengu, a 26-year-old from kwaDabeka Township in Durban, is going to Los Angeles to compete in the Mr Universe competition.
He’s representing Africa along with a contestant from Egypt.
Ntando won Mr South Africa in 2021 while studying BCom Accounting at Eduvos in Cape Town.
He said his modelling career actually started by accident in high school.
“I was not even a model when I entered Mr Stellenberg High School in 2016 when my friends nominated me without my consent,” he said.
“I was so surprised when my name was called to take part in that contest.”
He said his friends laughed at him and claimed that they were just joking when they put his name on the nomination list.
After winning in high school, he focused on his studies. Five years later, he was encouraged to enter Mr South Africa, which he won in 2021.
The Mr Universe competition starts on 15 December, with the crowning on 22 December 2024.
Ntando fights for quality education in rural and township communities.
He said when his parents took him to white schools he met many white friends who did not have to struggle for education.
“They would get anything they want easily from their parents including going to schools of their choice,” he said.
“My township youth friends don’t have such privileges. They struggle to get quality education because of their backgrounds. That is why I decided to focus on this program.”
He flies to Los Angeles on 13 December 2024.
