Klate – If I Can Survive At Chippa…

Chippa United head coach Daine Klate has said that if he can survive in this job, he thinks he can probably survive anywhere.

The Gqeberha- born former SuperSport United, Orlando Pirates and Bidvest Wits star is currently two games into his first major head coach role, having succeeded interim coach Kurt Lentjies at the start of the 2022/2023 DStv Premiership campaign.

Speaking to Velile Mnyandu in the latest edition of iDiski Times, Klate said he felt the time was right for him to step up, having previously worked with the club’s Diski Challenge side.

“Definitely I had to start somewhere,” Klate told iDiski Times. “You can’t choose, if I could choose, I want that job, give me that job, it doesn’t work like that in football.

“You have got to take the job that’s available and if it suits you. I felt that I was ready. There were already a couple of times when I was called up when coach Norman Mapeza was here for the assistant role, but I declined it back then because I felt I wasn’t ready.

“I needed to stay in the Diski league and learn more. Even so, now I didn’t realise I was ready but when the opportunity came, I said for a couple of years I have rejected joining the PSL, so maybe it’s the right time now to join the PSL and see what difference I can make.

“Like you said, for the most part for me I had to start somewhere and if I can survive in this environment, I think I can probably survive anywhere.

“It’s going to be a massive learning curve for me, hopefully, it’s a successful period, hopefully, we can finish the season as I did in the Diski league.

“That was massive for me, finishing 30 games over a course of a season, and seeing where we ended, that for me is progress in my career.

“Obviously, I think there is a lot of doubt outside there but I don’t think we doubt ourselves on the inside. We have to be positive.”

In this week’s edition of iDiski Times we catch up with former Mamelodi Sundowns star Sibusiso Vilakazi as he talks about his ups and downs with the Brazilians, as well as his ambitions with TS Galaxy. We also hear from the newly appointed Chippa United coach, Daine Klate, who reveals what type of football he wants his team to play, and why he decided to take on one of the hottest seats in PSL coaching.
