KwaZulu-Natal’s acting premier, Thembeni Madlopha-Mthethwa, believes King Shaka’s leadership in the early 1800s inspired today’s government of national unity (GNU).
At the 196th commemoration of King Shaka’s passing, Madlopha-Mthethwa said: “King Shaka kaSenzangakhona created a version of the GNU by bringing together different tribes to form a strong Zulu nation.”
She stated that Shaka’s vision was to unite the people as one peaceful nation.
“He even championed the rights of women, as he protected figures like Mkabayi kaJama during his reign,” she added.
Princess Mkabayi kaJama was the head of the Qulusi military kraal and acted as a regent during the reign of King Shaka, her half-brother.
Madlopha-Mthethwa assured King Misuzulu kaZwelithini that the provincial government will continue working to improve the lives of the people in KZN.
“The government of provincial unity has shown that different political parties can work in harmony to unite the people in various ways, from development to social cohesion,” she said.
