KING SABATA DALINYEBO MAYOR NYANISO NELANI RECUSES HIMSELF FROM MUNICIPAL DUTIES PENDING FINALISATION OF COURT PROCESS

The King Sabata Dalindyebo Local Municipality Executive Mayor, Nyaniso Nelani from the Eastern Cape, has recused himself from the execution of his duties, pending the finalisation of a legal process currently before the court.

This follows Nelani’s brief appearance at the Mthatha Magistrate’s Court on the 30th of June on allegations of fraud.

In a statement released on Thursday, the municipality said it must also be placed on record that the Nelani did not appear in court on charges of corruption, as it has been reported in some publications.

“The court appearance relates to charges that were laid against Nelani and others following the 2024 ANC election manifesto launch held in Durban. After his court appearance, Nelani submitted a written request to the leadership of the ANC in the region, indicating his decision to recuse himself from his official duties.

“This decision is intended to allow the legal process to unfold without distraction and to protect the integrity of the Office of the Executive Mayor.The Municipality notes the Executive Mayor’s decision and assures residents and stakeholders that municipal operations will continue without interruption. Appropriate internal and political processes will guide any interim arrangements where necessary,” it reads.

It further said KSD Municipality is committed to ethical leadership, accountability, and transparency; and as such, this matter is being handled by Council through the Ethics Committee.

“The Municipality further reiterate its commitment and assurance to residents and stakeholders that services will be provided without interruption. Despite the seriousness of these charges against other municipal officials; the Municipality will apply the principle of innocent until proven guilty by the relevant authorities,” it reads.

Additionally, it said it remains committed to cooperating fully with the legal process and maintains his respect for the rule of law.
