Khune backs Bafana AFCON star

Former Kaizer Chiefs captain Itumeleng Khune has praised Lyle Foster’s performance for Bafana Bafana in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The 25-year-old striker has scored two goals and provided two assists in three matches for Bafana Bafana. In recent months, the Burnley striker was criticised for his lack of scoring and combination play.

Although he hasn’t produced a top performance in the three games, he has managed to score crucial goals, which ultimately helped Bafana reach the last 16.

Khune was impressed with Foster’s goal against Zimbabwe in Bafana’s last group match.

“We rely on him as number nine, he showed his bravery with his second goal when he went one on one with the goalkeeper,” said Khune on SABC Sport.

“The referees always protect the goalkeepers inside the box, but he won the ball, and it went to the back of the net.

“It’s something we want to see when the strikers are inside the box. They must show hunger and the will to score.

“He did show that he plays in the European league where they are very physical. He was even bleeding, and he took one for the team.”

Bafana move to AFCON next round

Having finished second in Group B, Bafana will now face Cameroon in the round of 16. In the last tournament, Bafana made it all the way to the semi-final before losing on penalties to Nigeria.

In this edition, Hugo Broos’ charges are yet to produce a good performance despite winning two matches.

Where will Bafana finish?
