Premier Soccer League (PSL) Chairman Dr. Irvin Khoza has made a huge announcement to the media at the Parktown offices in Johannesburg on Tuesday morning.
The PSL called a press conference on Monday stating Khoza was due to make a ‘major announcement’ which was speculated to be linked with the newly formed Motsepe Foundation Championship.
Another wrangling topic that was bounced around was the possible introduction of Video Assistant Refereeing (VAR) into the PSL. But on Tuesday, Khoza confirmed that the Carling Knockout Cup will replace the Telkom Knockout Cup.
“Today, I’m happy to announce a new sponsor and partner, Carling Black Label,” he said on Tuesday morning.
“There is a gap in our calendar, the Telkom used to be played between October and December, so we tried to find space for our new competition.
“We have agreed as a league, the Exco is aware, to launch the Carling Knockout Cup.
“We’ve discovered that in and around December people need more football. We’ve agreed to a bit of innovation to go into it.”
