Entertainment commentator, Phil Mphela, shared on X that flamboyant businessman Mandla Elliot Mthembu, formerly married to media personality Khanyi Mbau, has passed away.

Mthembu passed away in New York on the evening of September 21, 2025, at the age of 68, following a second stroke.

Mthembu, who married Mbau in 2006, was widely known for his luxurious lifestyle, high-profile relationships, and public appearances. Their marriage often attracted media attention, with the couple openly showcasing wealth, glamour, and the extravagances of their life together.

After divorcing in 2009, Mthembu stepped away from the public eye, with rumours about finances and personal life circulating quietly.

According to a statement shared by his family, Mthembu had been admitted to a hospital, where he tragically lost his life due to a second stroke.

“Mr. Mthembu was admitted to hospital, where he suffered a second stroke. Despite the tireless efforts of medical professionals, he succumbed to complications related to the stroke.

“Throughout his life, Mr Mthembu was known for his entrepreneurial spirit, his contributions to South Africa’s business landscape, and his commitment to the values of the ANC,” reads the statement.

“His legacy will be remembered by many across the country.”

The family has requested privacy and said that details of Mandla Mthembu’s memorial service will be shared in due course.

INSIDE KHANYI AND MTHEMBU’S LOVE LIFE

Mandla was previously customarily married to media personality Khanyi Mbau. He is the biological father of their daughter, Khanukani “Khanz” Mbau. The couple tied the knot in 2006, when Khanyi was just 21 and Mandla was 30 years older than her.

Their marriage, however, faced challenges as Mandla encountered financial difficulties that put a strain on their relationship. Revelations of infidelity and abuse from Khanyi ultimately led to the end of their brief union in 2009.

Mandla stepped away from the public eye, while Khanyi continues to remain in the spotlight. Since news of his passing, messages of condolences have been pouring in across social media.
