Khanyi Mbau’s ex-husband has died

South Africans are mourning the passing of businessman Mandla Mthembu, the former husband of actress and reality star Khanyi Mbau.

Mthembu reportedly died in New York on Sunday, 21 September 2025, at the age of 68 following stroke complications.

Speaking to News24, Khanyi Mbau, who shares a daughter with Mthembu, kept her response brief but respectful.

“We do hope he rests in peace. That’s all we can say. It’s never nice to hear bad news,” she said.

The family confirmed that Mthembu passed away in hospital and revealed that he is survived by six children: Khanukani, Melusi, Nelisiwe, Onentando, Ntando, and Sibongile.

Entertainment commentator Phil Mphela also confirmed the news on his X account on Monday, 22 September.

Mthembu, who was once one of the most talked-about figures in business and entertainment circles, left South Africans divided in their reflections on his life and legacy.

One user on X wrote, “Mandla Mthembu is Khanyi’s ex-husband and the father of Khanyi’s only daughter. In his death, we shouldn’t be characterising him as some sort of ex-boyfriend. May he rest in peace.”

Another added, “He had a weak legacy. He blew R260 million in 6 months, bought 2x yellow Lambos, and let a below-average baddie milk him dry.”
