Kapinga Out, Motupa Retained At Sundowns

Mamelodi Sundowns have opted not to activate their option with Lesedi Kapinga but have retained forward Gift Motupa for the 2023/24 season.

Kapinga, who issued a transfer request back in January, is officially a free agent after the club opted not to extend his one-year option.

It comes as no surprise, despite talks within local media that he could be used in a player-swap deal in recent weeks for potential new signings.

He joins Surprise Ralani as the players who have now left the DStv Premiership champions who have announced Junior Mendieta as their latest signing while Lucas Ribeiro Costa is set to join the club from SK Beveren in the coming days.

However, the shock move from the club is Motupa, who was said to have been heading for the exit door after an alleged fallout with management, but he’s seen his option activated in the final few days before the end of June deadline.

iDiski Times sources confirmed he returned to the club for pre-season with the view of getting back to full fitness after a couple of injury-hit months at Chloorkop, where he’s yet to showcase the form that landed him a move to the club.

The 28-year-old joined Sundowns from the now-defunct Bidvest Wits in September 2020 and has featured 22 times, with three goals and three assists to his name.
