Kaizer Chiefs suffered a surprise 3-1 defeat to Sekhukhune United in their top-of-the-table Betway Premiership clash at FNB Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Bradley Grobler struck twice, either side of Flavio Da Silva’s equaliser, before Thabang Monare sealed all three points for the visitors.

After a bright start, Chiefs conceded their first goal of the campaign after only five minutes. A long ball forward was flicked on by Monare into the path of Tsepo Matsibi. With the Amakhosi defence stretched, the fullback steered the ball across goal for Grobler to finish at the far post.

Chiefs were level within ten minutes thanks to Da Silva’s second goal of the season. The move was sparked by a driving run from Pule Mmodi, who released Glody Lilepo down the right. The Congolese winger delivered a low cross for Da Silva to bundle home for a deserved equaliser.

The hosts pressed for another before the break. Reeve Frosler forced a save from Sekhukhune goalkeeper Toaster Nsabata in the 32nd minute, and Lilepo fired over the bar shortly after.

The midfield battle resumed after the restart, but Amakhosi fell behind again in the 50th minute. Grobler struck his second of the night.

Six minutes later, Monare extended Sekhukhune’s advantage. Beating Chiefs’ high defensive line, he raced through on goal and calmly slotted past Petersen to make it 3-1.

A late Lilepo header and long-range efforts from substitutes George Matlou and Mfundo Vilakazi failed to reduce the deficit, as Chiefs suffered their first defeat of the season.
