Kaizer Chiefs star believes he can make Afcon squad

Thabiso Monyane isn’t giving up on Afcon 2025. The Kaizer Chiefs right-back is back from injury and ready to show Hugo Broos he deserves a spot, even as Amakhosi currently risk having no one in Bafana Bafana’s squad.

With the tournament kicking off on 21 December in Morocco, Monyane knows the next few matches are his chance to force the coach’s hand.

THABISO MONYANE EYES AFCON 2025 SQUAD

Bafana Bafana, semifinalists at the last Afcon, are drawn in Group B with Egypt, Angola, and Zimbabwe. Coach Hugo Broos is expected to name his squad in the first week of December, and with Monyane sidelined by injury, Sundowns’ Khuliso Mudau held the top right-back spot, while Polokwane City’s Thabang Matuludi was second choice.

Monyane made a strong comeback in Kaizer Chiefs’ 4–1 win over Orbit College on 4 November, but Broos had already listed his squad against for the warm-up friendly against Zambia in Gqeberha on the 15th. Nevertheless, the defender is keeping the faith.

“I’m very positive minded you know and like I said, you never know what might happen,” Monyane said on the Omni Audio Africa Podcast. “You know, I’m always raising my hand up.

“You know, every time I get a chance to play, I give my all. And yesterday [4 November], I was so happy to see the coach [Hugo Broos] was watching the game… so you never know, anything is possible,” the man who wears the Kaizer Chiefs jersey number 2 shirt added.

FOUR MATCHES REMAINING BEFORE AFCON BREAK

Amakhosi have four matches left in 2025, two in the CAF Confederation Cup and two in the Betway Premiership, and Monyane knows this is his chance to put pressure on coach Broos.

  • 23 November – Al-Masry (away)
  • 29 November – Zamalek (home)
  • 3 December – Chippa United (home)
  • 7 December – TS Galaxy (away).
