Kaizer Chiefs lose two players but welcome key return

Kaizer Chiefs return to the spotlight on Sunday when they host Durban City at FNB Stadium.

The Glamour Boys are desperate to stop their recent slide after dropping from fourth place to sixth on the table.

KAIZER CHIEFS TEAM NEWS BEFORE DURBAN CITY CLASH

The club has taken zero points from their last four matches, increasing the pressure around Naturena. As preparations continue, the technical team will also have to deal with suspensions and injuries.

“Chiefs will be without Aden McCarthy and Sibongiseni Mthethwa, both suspended after picking up their fourth cautions in the previous match.

“On a positive note, defender Zitha Kwinika returns to the squad after serving his one-match suspension, giving the technical team a welcome boost in defence.

“Several injuries continue to limit options, but the squad has enough depth and remains focused on delivering a strong performance,” a statement from the club read.

SELECTION CHALLENGE FOR THE TECHNICAL TEAM

The clash with Durban City now carries extra importance for Amakhosi. Another defeat would deepen their difficult run, while a win could help restore confidence inside the squad as the Betway Premiership season approaches its final stretch.

For Kaizer Chiefs, Sunday’s match may prove to be a crucial turning point. Amakhosi and the Citizens meet up for the second time this season, with Amakhosi hoping the script plays out much the same as the first encounter.

The two sides met on 31 October 2025 at Moses Mabhida Stadium, where Kaizer Chiefs edged a tight contest to secure a 1–0 victory.

The breakthrough only arrived late in the match. In the 88th minute, Flávio Silva rose highest in the box to head home a well-delivered cross from Gastón Sirino, sending the Amakhosi bench into celebration.

The victory proved important at the time as it ended a frustrating four-match winless run for Kaizer Chiefs and lifted the club up to third place on the Betway Premiership table.

Midfielder Sibongiseni Mthethwa also played a key role in the result and was later named Man of the Match after producing a disciplined display in midfield.
