Kaizer Chiefs legend Brian Baloyi has defended Itumeleng Khune regarding his future as a goalkeeper.
Khune’s contract with Chiefs ended on 30 June, and he hasn’t been given a new deal. He was also left out of Amakhosi’s tour of Turkey, creating uncertainty about his future.
Football fans have different opinions about Khune. Some believe he can still play, while others think he should retire.
Baloyi feels there’s too much pressure on the 37-year-old, who has spent his entire professional career at Naturena.
“No one can tell anyone to retire; it’s a personal choice, so it’s up to him,” Baloyi told Scrolla.Africa.
“Sometimes, the public is too judgmental. We make decisions for people that they should make themselves. No one should say he must retire or continue playing. Only he can decide.”
Khune has said he wants to keep playing until he is 40.
However, it seems he is not part of new coach Nasreddine Nabi’s plans, who brought in his own goalkeeper coach, Ilyes Mzoughi.
Rwanda international goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari has been signed as a long-term replacement for Khune.
The former Bafana Bafana captain has been offered a coaching role within the club’s development structures but has been reluctant to accept it.
