Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper set for fresh start

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen has admitted that the team still has some issues to fix ahead of the 2025/26 season.

The 30-year-old spent most of last season on the bench with Nasreddine Nabi preferring Bruce Bvuma. Ahead of the Nedbank Cup final, Bvuma was dropped for Petersen as Amakhosi won their first trophy in 10 years.

With the season kicking off this weekend, the former Bidvest Wits shotstopper is likely to be Kaizer Chiefs’ number one goalkeeper when Amakhosi plays Stellenbosch next weekend.

“If you compare last season, like from the start of pre-season to obviously this season, last season it was new coaches, new technical team, new ideas, all of that,” said Petersen on SABC TV.

“Not 100% sure what we want to do, where we want to be, where we’re supposed to be, but I think this season, starting now, from this pre-season, people could see that there’s so much more trust and understanding in the game plan, knowing what we want to do. And I think the main part is understanding your role and the responsibility within the system.

“And I think this season, you can see that the guys are understanding that and that gives us that confidence to be able to stick to the game plan and do what we know we can do and show the people that this is what we’ve been working on, and we can do it. So, I know for a fact that from here, we’re just going to get better.

“Yes, there’s still a few things we need to fix in the build-up, but as you can see, there’s so much improvement and progress. So definitely for sure this season you’ll see us more confident playing out from the back and obviously the saving attacks and keeping the ball,” Petersen said.

It was reported that Kaizer Chiefs might look for a new goalkeeper this pre-season, with Fiacre Ntwari likely to be sold.

Will Petersen improve Chiefs?
